Current Research
Space Weather contains many research disciplines, all of them important and interesting. I am personally interested in two aspects of space weather: the origin of space weather and the effects.
The Sun is the driver of space weather. It is the complex interaction of the plasma flow and the solar magnetic field in the solar atmosphere that can cause a variety of explosive events such as flares and coronal mass ejections. Understanding the relationship and evolution between these parameters is the key to unlock some of the secrets of our Sun.
If we are able to forecast this activity on the Sun, we have a better chance to forecast the effects that can cause havoc on systems and operations, both on the ground and in space. Many of these effects are described in the Space Weather section. One of the most important effect is GIC, Geomagnetically Induced Currents, since it can affect one of the most important infrastrutures in our society: our power grids.
